Luggage for travelling - Travel. O. P. Hi all,I'm heading overseas and I'm looking at getting a good brand of luggage. What do members recommend? You can get soft frameless (no or minimal frames aka duffles or rucksacks) also means that when you get to the check- in line, usually there is room to squish your bag in that little metal frame and take it on board with you. If you get cheap ones though they can be crushed and shatter (thank you Virgin Blue ; p)I like soft sides with frames. I used to use a Samsonite which was excellent – the fabric is so tough that it almost feels like a hard case, however recently I've switched over to American Tourister (http: //www. Cons: tiny and the fabric/construction is not as sturdy as the samsonite, but I don't really care as I pack very light, and I never check my luggage in anyway). Pros: My samsonite was 5kg and this one is 2. It's one of the lightest cases on the market. I love my soft- side High Sierra for international trips and my Airport roll- on has clocked a lot of miles. But one thing I never fail to miss is that international cabin- crew seem to swear by hard cases (eg Samonsite Oyster). I've still got an Oyster which is close to 2. Hard cases are going to last a lot longer if you are a high- miler. On another note I never exceed 1. I'm entitled to as much as 4. It amazes me how much stuff people lug around – I've even gone overnight domestically for work with gym gear all in just one laptop bag! Travelling light is the way to go. But which ones are the best? Yahoo Travel teamed up with. The following day, one piece showed up at. Of all the options for travel bags, I'd consider only five: a carry-on-size soft backpack. One of the most important things a backpacker can find is a great travel backpack. It holds all your gear, it’s with you almost all the time, and in some bizarre. Buy suitcases, travel bags and laptop bags from the Samsonite online shop. Free suitcase delivery in the UK. Free returns. Yombie writes.. What's the difference between soft and hard besides the obvious? I travel a fair bit for work and have both hard and soft bags (both Antler brand). Has anyone had any experience with those? Yombie writes.. A work friend suggested antler bags? Has anyone had any experience with those? Yes. I have a couple of Antler bags and they have done a lot of work over 8 years and still going strong. I like Samsonite and always get the hard cases, yes they are generally a little heavier which means you cant carry quite as much, but if you have seen how the baggage handlers treat bags... Free shipping on all watch cases over $100. Jomashop.com features a selection of high quality watch cases at low prices, including Invicta and Wolf Designs watch boxes. The thing to be aware of is if you go for a zipper closure. If you do, you cant really jam the bag full of stuff, sit on it and expect the zip to hold. Therefore I always go for the older clip style locks just in case. The only other thing I look for is 4 wheels on the bottom over 2. So much more convenient and with the 2 bags of different sizes I have, which I have had for years now, the wheels have never broken so I would worry about that. If you can afford it, Victorinox make quality luggage. I feel samsonite's build quality is inferior to vicotorinox bags, but they are much cheaper. Victorinox have a lifetime warranty that covers carrier damage, whereas most companies only cover manufacturing defects. They also roll really well. I have only tried the Werks and the Spectra rane, have a 2. Love them all. In AU you should be able to get 4. Myer or online. Don't pay RRPI'm very happy with my Antler hard case cabin suitcase – it has 4 wheels which makes it easy to move around. For OS travel I've got a larger Delsey hard case one – also on 4 wheels – even though it did get a little crack in it last big trip. Another handy hint, don't get a black suitcase – after a long flight, it's hard to focus on finding your luggage on the carousel when most of the suitcases in front of you are black! Might be an idea to travel light and buy luggage OS. Not big on the idea of exp looking luggage. Could be being paranoid, but would think it would be more of a target for thieves. Has anybody tried any of the backpack/wheels combinations? We are doing 1. 1 countries in 4 months, with many short train trips city to city in Europe, with lots of walking. Would backpack for rough terrain combined with wheels for the rest of the time be the best of both worlds, or just add too much weight? I am looking at this one for example: http: //theluggageprofessionals. I like the idea of the detachable day pack, at least in theory! Feylabel writes.. Has anybody tried any of the backpack/wheels combinations? Any of those . Also, i found the daypack pulls your centre of gravity too far back. You really need it clipped on the front if anything, particularly if your passport and money is going to be in there. OP, these days luggage gets thrown around and wrecked, i don't spend much on bags, as i don't expect them to last long. Not the cheapest, just a cheap . I travel alot and really love the ability to roll or carry based on the terrain. A huge luggage and a medium luggage you can add inside to the large luggage, the key is to carry less when you're travelling overseas and come back with lots of luggages ; )OP where you heading? Samsonite Skywheeler Series. Only takes one to make it go nutty and the swivel wheels are more likely to break than a 2 wheeler. I used to be a two wheeler too (wide spaced)But four are better and with Samsonite at least they don't break. With two you are always carrying a weight leveraged. With four they skim along at airports, weightless. Fours are tricky on cobbles.. The Possum writes.. I used to be a two wheeler too (wide spaced)But four are better and with Samsonite at least they don't break. With two you are always carrying a weight leveraged. With four they skim along at airports, weightless. Fours are tricky on cobbles.. I was down at Katoomba when you made your post, The Possum. I needed to sort out luggage for that trip, and what you say about 4 wheel spinner luggage is pretty accurate. But you missed one surface type where 4 wheel luggage is an utter failure. Grass. You can more easily manouver a 2 wheel suitcase on grass than a 4 wheel, and when you have to clean the axles and wheels of grass; dirt; and other materials, a 2 wheel is far easier to do this to than a 4 wheel, not because of fewer wheels, but larger and more accessible wheel arches and axles. Another thing I like about a 2- wheel is parking the suitcase on any sort of incline. You can readily get a 2 wheel to stay parked on an incline. Can you easily do the same with a 4 wheel? For the trip to Katoomba I bought a 7. Victoria Station at Chermside, one of their own branded lines, evalite. Price to capacity to weight, it was a winner, $9. Kg unladen. To do better on unladen weight, I would have to do Name Brand, at near on double the price for about . Kg weight saved, but also have a lower capacity. Jenifur Charne. There is not much grass at airports and hotels. Yes there will be special situations where two wheels are better. YMMVThe Possum writes.. There is not much grass at airports and hotels. Indoors at duty free shopping centres airports, hotels, motels, shopping centres, and in the CBD, no. Yes there will be special situations where two wheels are better. YMMVFor me, to get to the train station to get to the airport, it's cut across a practice cricket ground. So I really don't get a lot of choice, I have to stay with 2 wheel luggage. Because I have to be aware of this when selecting luggage, I simply noted that it had not, yet, been mentioned in the thread as a weakness of 4 wheel spinner luggage. Spinner luggage is great on trains and in corridors, as you can rotate the luggage to its narrowest axis and push it ahead of you. You simply cannot do that with 2 wheel luggage. Jenifur Charnemy only thought is be careful of very light luggage from cheap no- name brands. Usually the lightness is a result of cheap materials. And be wary of zips. Cheap ones undo themselves at bad moments. I bought a Monsac case from Myer about 2 years ago, so far I have taken it overseas around 1. It was fairly cheap, I think 1. The thing I was very mindful of when buying a case was the zips.. Tumi duffle bag, similar to this one.. That's what my wife and I do, as all our luggage is undertaker black. The reason why I prefer the luggage itself to be distinctive is due to how ordinary baggage handling can tear off padlock and tags. Unless I am mistaken, adding ribbons would be at risk of similar, and then at the carousel, if such a tear- off has happened, you are left with a plain, unmarked, black bag, among numbers of other similar black bags. Jenifur Charne. Use multiple markers. They can't tear them all off! Jeni. Skunk writes.. Jenifur when it comes to distinctive luggage. Go for a Hard case, waterproof and no zips or hanging locks. Absolutely. See my previous post. Cheap is nasty. Remo Williams writes.. As a professional bag destroyer, don't cheap out. Go for a Hard case, waterproof and no zips or hanging locks. The issue with hardcases is how much they eat into your total weight allowance. Jenifur Charne. Use a Garbag! A small price to pay for when some idiot packs two bottles of red wine or JB in their soft luggage and leaks all over your bags. Good thread, I'm also looking for new luggage atm for domestic travel, perfectly sized and light enough for carry on. Victoria Station and Strand Bags are on sale atm with their Samsonites and Antlers if anyone is keen 3. Just a random side note, while waiting to collect my bags few weeks back I saw an empty Country Road overnight bag going round and round the conveyor belt lol who would bother checking it in and waiting for it I don't know. Just a random side note, while waiting to collect my bags few weeks back I saw an empty Country Road overnight bag going round and round the conveyor belt lol who would bother checking it in and waiting for it I don't know. Maybe it was full when checked in?. I'm also looking for new luggage atm for domestic travel, perfectly sized and light enough for carry on. Check the Australian airlines limits for the size of carry- on. Australian domestic carry- on size limits are smaller than international. Use a plastic non- reuseable supermarket grocery bag to weigh what you plan to put in the carry- on. Subtract that from the weight limit for carry- on for the airline you plan to travel on. Then you know how much your carry- on bag can weigh, unladen.
